Tried & True: Dowell and Everyday Styling Made Simple

Find out how a brand built on the simple idea of "doing well" made its way to vanity tables by creating hair tools designed to fit the realities of Filipino routines.

Welcome to our Tried & True series, where we highlight the holy grails and OGs, the top-shelf regulars and under-the-radar picks, as well as the new, fresh-off-the-lab products and viral sensations worth the hype—all from reputable brands we’ve road-tested ourselves.

Behind the name, we explore what makes a brand worth discovering, whether it’s how it has redefined beauty, its founder’s inspiring story, or how its range of offerings gave consumers what they truly want and need. In this edition, we take a closer look at Dowell, the Filipino brand turning practical engineering into everyday hair care essentials.

Some of the most enduring local brands are born from moments of change. In 1998, as the Asian financial crisis reshaped how Filipinos spent, saved, and prioritized their purchases, imported appliances became less accessible to the average household. Collins International Trading Corporation, then a distributor of high-end home products, saw an opening in the market. The question was simple: if global brands were moving further out of reach, could a local one step in to meet the people’s needs?

They named it Dowell—not from a founder’s surname or a coined word, but from a simple directive: do well. Do well in times of adversity. Make things that work, and make them work well.

For many Filipinos, Dowell is a familiar name long before hair styling tools became widely visible in the beauty space. The brand’s first product wasn’t a hair tool. It was an industrial electric fan, priced for the market that actually existed. But the logic that drove it has carried through everything Dowell has made since: quality shouldn’t require a premium you can’t afford.

For Dowell, its expansion into hair tools was a response to how grooming has become part of daily life for younger consumers. As Christian David, owner of Dowell Enterprises explains, “a big fraction of our market belongs to the Gen-Z’s and young professional bracket where proper grooming and pleasant appearance are parts of their daily lifestyle. We would like our brand to give them support not just in household errands but also in building their self-confidence.”

Keeping that sense of familiarity across generations while staying in step with changing beauty habits comes down to staying close to what people actually need. “At Dowell, we regularly conduct market research and active social listening making sure to release relevant products every season,” he shares.

“We consider not just aesthetics but most importantly safety, durability, and ease-of-use,” he explains. “We choose the products that are cost-efficient without compromising quality and performance.”

Over two decades later, that approach still shows up everywhere—from kitchens and laundry spaces to bathroom counters and, increasingly, vanity tables—moving with the way Filipinos actually live and get ready day to day.

HERO PRODUCT
AuraCare Pro Hair Blower

What makes the AuraCare Pro stand out is the jump in control and power for an everyday hair tool. A high-speed BLDC motor reaching 105,000 RPM paired with 1500 watts gives it noticeably faster drying performance, while still maintaining a more controlled airflow through its concentrated air design. It’s built for speed without feeling chaotic, which matters when you’re working through thick and long hair.

It’s level of customization is also worth noting. With 3 speed settings and 4 heat settings, it gives enough flexibility to adjust depending on hair type or styling goal—whether you’re rough-drying roots or smoothing lengths. The inclusion of a cool shot feature also helps set styles in place after heat styling, making the finish look more intentional rather than just dried.

It also feels more “complete” than a basic dryer thanks to its extras: 5 styling attachments (including a diffuser, flyaway smoother, and concentrator nozzles), plus a wall mount bracket that makes storage easier and more intentional. With the addition of the low noise operation and overheat protection, it becomes a strong everyday tool that balances speed, control, and practicality. It makes regular blow-drying faster, cleaner, and easier to repeat.

TOOL OF THE TRADE
CI-19 Curling Iron

The CI-19 was created for one clear job: creating defined, controlled curls without overcomplicating the process. With a 19mm barrel and ceramic coating, it’s built to help shape tighter curls while aiming for a smoother finish that reduces snagging and uneven heat spots during styling. It focuses on consistency, especially for everyday curl routines rather than high-maintenance styling sessions.

What makes it more flexible than a basic curling iron is its five temperature settings (140°C to 180°C), giving you room to adjust depending on hair type and desired hold. Finer hair can stay at lower heat for softer curls, while thicker strands can push higher for longer-lasting shape. The temperature indicator light and dedicated control buttons make it easy to monitor and adjust while styling.

EVERYDAY STAPLE
PHB-21 Hair Blower

The PHB-21 leans into straightforward functionality with a 1300-watt motor that delivers enough power for quick, no-fuss drying. It’s built for everyday routines where speed matters, helping move hair from wet to manageable without becoming too long of a process.

Control stays simple with 2 speed settings and a heat function paired with a concentrator nozzle, giving it just enough direction for more focused drying. That concentrator attachment helps streamline airflow, which can make a difference when you’re trying to smooth sections or reduce flyaways instead of just drying. It’s not overloaded with options, but it gives you the essentials that actually get used.

QUICK FIX FAVORITE
PHB-18 Hair Blower

The PHB-18 is designed for quick routines where you just need hair dried and manageable without committing to a full styling session, making it especially useful for shorter hair or lighter drying needs.

The controls stay simple with 2 speed settings and 2 heat levels, supported by a thermostat control function that helps regulate temperature for more consistent drying. Paired with a concentrator nozzle, it allows for more directed airflow when you want slightly smoother results.

What makes it especially practical is its everyday convenience design: a foldable handle for easy storage, hanging loop, and compact dimensions that make it easy to tuck away or bring along when needed.

UNDERRATED HOLY GRAIL
AuraCare Plus Hair Blower

The AuraCare Plus steps up the everyday hair dryer experience with a 1500-watt output and high-speed motor built for noticeably faster drying without feeling overly harsh on the hair. It moves air more efficiently, so drying time is cut down while still keeping control over how the hair is shaped as you go.

What makes it more versatile is the balance of three speed settings and four heat levels, giving enough flexibility to adjust depending on hair type, texture, and styling goal. The concentrated airflow and styling concentrator attachment help refine the finish which make it easier to smooth sections or direct airflow where it’s needed. The cool shot feature also helps lock in shape after heat styling to give the hair a more finished, set look.

It also feels more thoughtfully built for everyday use with low noise operation and overheat protection, so it’s easier to use regularly without discomfort or worry. The added wall mount bracket also keeps it within reach while saving space.

NEW ESSENTIAL
AuraCare SE Hair Blower

The AuraCare SE stands out for going back to basics in the most intentional way. With a 1300-watt output and a thermostat-controlled system, it’s built to deliver steady, manageable heat that keeps everyday drying straightforward. It provides dependable, controlled airflow that gets hair from wet to ready without the complexity.

What makes it distinct is its stripped-down control system: 2 speed and heat settings paired with a cool shot feature. Instead of overwhelming options, it gives just enough flexibility for daily use—quick drying when you’re in a rush, then a cool blast to help set the hair. It’s especially useful for low-maintenance routines where ease matters more than precision styling.

The retro, compact build also makes it easy to handle, store, and reach for daily, especially in smaller spaces or travel setups.

UNDER-THE-RADAR ESSENTIAL
HS-18T Hair Iron Straightener with Heat Sensor Device

This straightener makes hair look instantly more put-together without the learning curve. The ceramic-coated plates move smoothly through each section, making it easier to achieve a sleek finish with less tugging and fuss.

Where it earns its keep is in how wide it can go on heat. The 120°C to 220°C range means it can sit on the gentler side for everyday smoothing or push higher when you need something stronger for thicker, more resistant strands. The heat sensor and dial control keep the temperature from swinging too wildly while you move through the hair, so styling each section becomes more consistent.

PHB-20 Hair Blower

The PHB-20 immediately shows its strength in its upgraded motor, which translates into noticeably faster drying—especially for thick or long hair. If you’ve ever stood in front of a mirror watching the clock because your hair simply refuses to dry fast enough before you have to leave, this higher-powered dryer is the answer that may work for you. But the feature that makes a difference in how you style your hair is the cool shot button, and it’s worth understanding what it does before dismissing it as a minor addition.

Finishing a blowout with a burst of cool air is what sets the style. It closes the hair cuticle, adds shine, and helps the shape hold through the morning. Without it, hair stays soft and warm after drying, which would be nice until your blowout loses its shape before you’ve even left the bathroom. The cool shot is what converts a dryer into a styling step, and the PHB-20 is one of those in the Dowell range where that becomes available.
