Before Biodance even landed on Philippine shelves, it had already found its way onto Filipinos’ feeds.
The Korean skincare brand built a global following around its hydrogel masks, whose signature transformation—from opaque to transparent as they’re worn—turned an everyday skincare step into one of social media’s most recognizable beauty rituals. That visual transformation gave beauty enthusiasts something they increasingly look for in skincare.
Held at The Curve in BGC, Taguig, Biodance made its Philippine debut with Glass in Motion, a special edition of The Editor’s Room where guests got to experience the signature transformation firsthand before diving into the science, formulation, and philosophy behind one of K-beauty’s most talked-about skincare brands.
The Founder’s Search for Balance
Founder Kim Mihwa appeared in a video message played during the event, sharing how a personal accident that left her with facial scarring changed the way she thought about skin and ultimately led to the creation of Biodance. In searching for products that could help restore her skin without overwhelming it, she began developing a philosophy centered on balance—one that would eventually shape the brand itself.
She traced that philosophy back to its name. “From the start, ‘guidance’ was embedded in the name Biodance,” she said. “What I liked about the word ‘guidance’ was that it could bring balance or include key ingredients to become a brand that truly guides the consumer.”
That word—balance—also turned out to be the operative one for the brand’s entire formulation process, tracing back to a fairly simple problem: How do you give skin what it needs without overwhelming it? “That made me really think about the ideal point of balance for the skin,” Kim said. “It was really a battle for balance.”
One of the primary materials that helped her solve it was hydrogel. “First, I discovered a material called hydrogel, and the longer it stays on, the better for skin. I knew each moment it stayed on became special care,” Kim said. “I worked to balance my skin, so it felt nourished over time without overdoing it.” That instinct—more time on skin, more deliberate absorption—became the foundation for what would eventually be the brand’s hero product: the Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask.
Rather than simply talk about it, Biodance let the mask speak for itself. A model applied the Bio-Collagen Real Deep Mask at the start of the event, and throughout the program, guests watched the opaque hydrogel gradually lose its opacity as it absorbed into the skin—a glimpse of the transformation that has made the mask instantly recognizable across social media. While the full process typically takes about three to four hours to become fully transparent, the live demonstration gave guests a chance to watch the transformation begin in real time.
Why the Mask Goes Transparent
The disappearing-opacity trick isn’t a gimmick. Guest expert board-certified dermatologist Dr. Bea Chan explained that the hydrogel formula is temperature-sensitive by design. “These hydrogel masks… actually are very special because of what we call the temperature-sensitive mask,” she said. “It means that as you apply it, it can actually turn from opaque to transparent, which is also a visual indicator that almost all or all of the actives have been completely absorbed.”
Dr. Chan added that the rate of the transformation also varies from person to person. Skin that’s particularly dry or dehydrated tends to absorb the essence more quickly, allowing the mask to turn transparent sooner, while well-moisturized skin may take longer since it doesn’t need to take in the ingredients as rapidly.
In other words, the mask isn’t done working until it’s invisible.
The transparency is only the visible part of the story. Underneath, the mask delivers a formula centered on 243 Dalton collagen and oligo-hyaluronic acid, ingredients developed with ultra-low molecular weights to improve their ability to move past the skin’s surface, rather than simply sit on top of it.
“243 Dalton collagen, in comparison to others, which are like your 300-500 Dalton collagen, can actually penetrate deeper into your skin,” Dr. Chan said. “Your usual topical collagen skincare products fall under the 300-500 Dalton collagen. It usually just sits on the surface and can’t penetrate deep into your dermis.” The smaller molecular size, she said, translates to a measurable difference: clinical studies show it provides 1.7 times better skin absorption and 2.2 times better elasticity.
Oligo-hyaluronic acid works on the same principle. “By definition, [oligo-hyaluronic acids are] shorter-chain fragments of your native hyaluronic acid,” Dr. Chan explained. “Just like the 243 Dalton collagen, it can actually penetrate deeper, providing you with multi-level hydration that can last up to 72 hours.”
The Scaffold-and-Filler Effect
Individually, both ingredients do their jobs. Together, Dr. Chan said, they do something neither can alone. “Together, the 243 Dalton collagen and oligo-hyaluronic acid actually provide what I call a scaffold and filler effect,” she said. “You can see the active strands as your collagen literally provide a structural support on all your pores”—a mechanism she linked to an 84% decline in the appearance of pore size.
The hyaluronic acid handles the other half of the process. “The hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, actually clumps or fills up your extracellular matrix, decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she said. “One can’t literally exist without the other. Without structure, hydration cannot necessarily correct surface irregularities like sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles.” Structure without hydration has its own downside, she added, since it “can also make your skin look hollow and a bit more aged.” Together, she called it the most iconic pairing in the formula—and her personal favorite.
When Curiosity Meets Credibility
By the time the morning came to a close, guests had explored the full Biodance lineup, tested the hydrogel textures for themselves, and learned which formulas best matched their skin concerns. The mask worn by the model in the middle of the room had melted onto the skin—a visual that, by then, felt almost secondary. Everyone had gained a clearer understanding of the formulation choices behind it and a broader appreciation of why delivery systems matter just as much as ingredient lists.
More than introducing a new K-beauty brand, the launch took concepts that were often confined to just research papers and ingredient decks, and turned them into something they could see for themselves. Hydrogel technology became something guests could touch, and molecular weight became something they could watch unfold. A transparent mask became a starting point for a larger conversation about delivery systems, formulation, and why not all skincare performs the same way.
Perhaps that’s the most fitting interpretation of Glass in Motion—not simply glass skin in the making, but the rare opportunity to witness the science behind it in motion.
The experience also marked the beginning of Biodance’s Philippine journey.
