The Haircare Playbook: Local Heroes for Every Hair Type

Haircare isn’t just about products—it’s about understanding your hair at every level. This guide pairs expert insight with locally made essentials to help you build a routine that delivers shine, volume, and resilience.
Reading Time: 10 minutes

Haircare advice has never been more abundant. It lives in family traditions, in salon chairs, and now in the steady stream of recommendations that fill our feeds. “Don’t wash your hair every day.” “Always oil after every rinse.” “Avoid sulfates at all costs.” The guidance is often delivered as belief—clear, confident, and widely repeated. But popularity is not the same as precision.

It’s less a question of routine and more a reflection of how we are conditioned to choose. We gravitate toward what is visible, what is praised, what seems to work for the majority. Yet hair is deeply personal—shaped by density, porosity, curl pattern, chemical history, climate, and even water quality. Advice designed for “most” inevitably leaves someone out.

That same awareness is beginning to shape the products we reach for. As consumers grow more mindful of ingredient lists, demand has shifted toward gentler formulations—often free from sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. But while products are evolving, truly caring for our strands requires more than simply choosing “cleaner” formulas. It starts with understanding what our hair actually needs.

“A common mistake in haircare is choosing products based solely on brand reputation or personal preference, without fully understanding whether the product is actually formulated for your specific hair type and texture,” shares Filipino celebrity hairstylist Muriel Vega Perez.

The real shift happens when hair care stops being aspirational and starts being observational. To break down common misconceptions and share best practices for every hair type, we spoke with Vega Perez about how to care for your crowning glory the right way.

Scalp or Strands?

One of the most overlooked distinctions in haircare is also the most fundamental: the scalp is skin, while the strands are fiber. They behave differently, age differently, and respond to products differently. “If you are experiencing itching, redness, flaking, excessive oiliness at the roots, tenderness, or a burning sensation, the issue is likely scalp-related, as these symptoms affect the skin where hair grows,” Vega Perez explains.

These are signals from the skin itself—indications of imbalance at the root. Treating them with heavier conditioners or styling products may soften the strands, but it will not resolve what is happening beneath them. Conversely, when the scalp feels stable but the hair appears dry, brittle, dull, or prone to breakage, the concern lies within the hair shaft. Unlike the scalp, strands cannot repair themselves; they can only be protected, reinforced, and maintained.

Understanding this divide reframes the routine entirely. It moves the conversation away from trends and toward recognition. Instead of asking what is popular, the more useful question becomes: What is my hair communicating?

The Haircare Framework

Once the root cause of a hair concern is identified—whether it begins at the scalp or along the strands—the next layer is application: which shampoo to use, which conditioner to follow with, and how each product functions within a routine. The same discernment applied to skincare belongs here, too. Hair, after all, is an extension of the skin and just as responsive to formulation and frequency.

“People should reconsider their shampoo and conditioner by focusing on their specific scalp and hair needs rather than brand appeal or trends. This way, it will address your crowning glory needs efficiently,” says Vega Perez.

It is a shift from aesthetic-driven choices to essential-based ones. A clarifying shampoo may benefit an oil-prone scalp but prove too stripping for dry, chemically treated strands. A richly emollient conditioner might restore brittle ends while overwhelming finer textures. The framework is less about gathering products and more about aligning them with function.

Styling, too, is part of the equation. Heat applied to oil-heavy roots can flatten volume and exaggerate limpness. Over-reliance on dry shampoo without properly cleansing the scalp can cause buildup that dulls movement. Each decision—temperature, tension, product layering—shapes not only how hair looks in the moment, but its health over time.

“The way we style our hair also plays a role in how full and healthy it appears. With the right products and styling techniques, we can enhance volume, create movement, and achieve a naturally bouncy, beautiful look from every angle,” explains Vega Perez.

In this sense, haircare becomes architectural. Cleansing sets the foundation. Conditioning reinforces structure. Styling defines shape and movement. When each step is considered in relation to the others, the result is not just healthier-looking hair—but hair that behaves the way it is meant to.

With this in mind, we’ve created a localized haircare guide addressing the most common concerns in our climate—designed not around trends, but around the realities our hair navigates every day. Even better, we’ve highlighted solutions from proudly homegrown brands formulated with Filipino hair in mind.

The Local Haircare Handbook

The first step is knowing your mane. Find your type below and sort your routine by your hair needs.

If you have: Dry, Dehydrated, and Frizzy Hair

Dealing with dry, frizzy prone hair needs more than moisture—it needs gentle cleansing, lipid replenishment, and protection from heat stress. Coconut-derived cleansers, plant oils, aloe vera, and protein-rich formulas help restore softness, elasticity, and shine while preventing further dehydration during styling.

Word from the stylist: “Moisture-focused products paired with low-stress styling methods can help dry hair appear smoother, healthier, and more controlled over time,” says Vega Perez.

If you have: Dandruff, Itchy, and Flaky Scalp

Dandruff signals a scalp imbalance, often caused by excess oil, buildup, or irritation. Plant-powered formulas that soothe, clarify, and rebalance—without harsh chemical actives—help restore comfort while keeping the scalp breathable for styling.

Word from the stylist: Vega Perez says, “Keep your scalp clean with a good clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoo and don’t overload your roots with heavy products. Always rinse well—residue can make you itch.”

Word from the stylist: If your roots get oily but your ends are dry, try using a gentle shampoo for the scalp and save conditioner or treatments for the mid-lengths and ends. “Keep products off your roots and focus on moisturizing the ends so your hair feels balanced, healthy, and easy to style.”
