Welcome to our Tried & True series, where we highlight the holy grails and OGs, the top-shelf regulars and under-the-radar picks, as well as the new, fresh-off-the-lab products and viral sensations worth the hype—all from reputable brands we’ve road-tested ourselves.
Behind the name, we explore what makes a brand worth discovering, whether it’s how it has redefined beauty, its founder’s inspiring story, or how its range of offerings gave consumers what they truly want and need. In this edition, we take a closer look at Dowell, the Filipino brand turning practical engineering into everyday hair care essentials.
Some of the most enduring local brands are born from moments of change. In 1998, as the Asian financial crisis reshaped how Filipinos spent, saved, and prioritized their purchases, imported appliances became less accessible to the average household. Collins International Trading Corporation, then a distributor of high-end home products, saw an opening in the market. The question was simple: if global brands were moving further out of reach, could a local one step in to meet the people’s needs?
They named it Dowell—not from a founder’s surname or a coined word, but from a simple directive: do well. Do well in times of adversity. Make things that work, and make them work well.
For many Filipinos, Dowell is a familiar name long before hair styling tools became widely visible in the beauty space. The brand’s first product wasn’t a hair tool. It was an industrial electric fan, priced for the market that actually existed. But the logic that drove it has carried through everything Dowell has made since: quality shouldn’t require a premium you can’t afford.
For Dowell, its expansion into hair tools was a response to how grooming has become part of daily life for younger consumers. As Christian David, owner of Dowell Enterprises explains, “A big fraction of our market belongs to the Gen Z and young professional bracket, where proper grooming and pleasant appearance are parts of their daily lifestyle. We would like our brand to give them support not just in household errands but also in building their self-confidence.”
Keeping that sense of familiarity across generations while staying in step with changing beauty habits comes down to staying close to what people actually need. “We regularly conduct market research and active social listening making sure to release relevant products every season,” he shares.
“We consider not just aesthetics but most importantly safety, durability, and ease-of-use,” he explains. “We choose the products that are cost-efficient without compromising quality and performance.”
Over two decades later, that approach still shows up everywhere—from kitchens and laundry spaces to bathroom counters and, increasingly, vanity tables—moving with the way Filipinos actually live and get ready day to day.
HERO PRODUCT
AuraCare Pro Hair Blower
If this looks familiar, that’s probably the point. It’s chasing the same benchmark that made digital-motor dryers a status symbol—and Dowell’s just made that benchmark a lot more affordable. The high-speed BLDC motor hits 105,000 RPM at 1500 watts, and the difference is immediate: air moves fast enough to cut drying time down noticeably, but the concentrated nozzle keeps that power feeling directed rather than blasted, more like a focused current than a gust. Working through thick, long hair is the part where it matters most, as speed alone just moves hot air around. Control is what shapes it.
Its level of customization is also worth noting. With three speed settings and four heat settings, it gives enough flexibility to adjust depending on hair type or styling goal—whether you’re rough-drying roots or smoothing lengths. The inclusion of a cool shot feature also helps set styles in place after heat styling, making the finish look more intentional rather than just dried.
It also feels more “complete” than a basic dryer thanks to its extras: five styling attachments (including a diffuser, flyaway smoother, and concentrator nozzles), plus a wall mount bracket that makes storage easier and more intentional. With the addition of the low noise operation and overheat protection, it becomes a strong everyday tool that balances speed, control, and practicality. It makes regular blow-drying faster, cleaner, and easier to repeat.

TOOL OF THE TRADE
CI-19 Curling Iron
The CI-19 does one thing and does it precisely: defined, controlled curls without the extra steps. The 19mm ceramic barrel doesn’t drag or catch as it glides through hair in one continuous motion, closer to combing warm silk than wrestling with heat. That smoothness is what keeps curls even instead of crimped, section after section.
Five temperature settings, from 140°C to 180°C, mean the iron adjusts to the hair rather than forcing the hair to adjust to it. Finer strands hold shape at the lower end, thicker hair gets the extra heat it needs to actually last through the day. A temperature indicator light also takes the guesswork out of “Is this hot enough yet?”—which matters most on rushed mornings when you don’t have time to test and retest.

EVERYDAY STAPLE
PHB-21 Hair Blower
This is the one you keep in a gym bag, a dorm room, or a second bathroom because it does exactly what’s needed and nothing it doesn’t. The 1300-watt motor moves hair from wet to manageable at a pace that respects your time to get ready in the morning.
Two speed settings and a single heat function, paired with a concentrator nozzle, keep the airflow focused enough to smooth flyaways instead of just scattering heat everywhere. There’s something refreshing about how straightforward it is. Point, dry, done. If you prefer tools that get the job done without overcomplicating the process, this is where it shines.

UNDERRATED HOLY GRAIL
AuraCare Plus Hair Blower
The AuraCare Plus steps up the everyday hair dryer experience with a 1500-watt output and high-speed motor built for noticeably faster drying without feeling overly harsh on the hair. It moves air more efficiently, so drying time is cut down while still keeping control over how the hair is shaped as you go.
What makes it more versatile is the balance of three speed settings and four heat levels, giving enough flexibility to adjust depending on hair type, texture, and styling goal. The concentrated airflow and styling concentrator attachment help refine the finish which make it easier to smooth sections or direct airflow where it’s needed. The cool shot feature also helps lock in shape after heat styling to give the hair a more finished, set look.
It also feels more thoughtfully built for everyday use with low noise operation and overheat protection, so it’s easier to use regularly without discomfort or worry. The added wall mount bracket also keeps it within reach while saving space.

UNDER-THE-RADAR ESSENTIAL
HS-18T Hair Iron Straightener with Heat Sensor Device
The ceramic-coated plates are what make this one worth mentioning. They move through hair with almost no resistance, none of the tug-and-catch that turns straightening into a chore. What comes out the other side looks less “styled” and more like hair that simply decided to behave.
Its range runs wide, from 120°C to 220°C, wide enough to sit gently on fine, everyday strands or push through thicker, more resistant hair without multiple passes. The heat sensor keeps that temperature from drifting mid-section, so the first pass and the last pass come out looking like they belong to the same style.

PHB-20 Hair Blower
The PHB-20 makes its case immediately: an upgraded motor that shortens drying time noticeably, especially on thick or long hair that usually eats up a whole morning. But the feature that actually changes how a style turns out is the cool shot button. It could be easy to dismiss as a minor add-on, until you understand what it’s doing.
A burst of cool air at the end of a blowout closes the hair cuticle, adds shine, and locks the shape in place through the day. Skip it, and hair stays soft and warm right after drying. It might be pleasant for about ten minutes, until the blowout starts to fall before you’ve even left the bathroom. The cool shot is what turns a dryer into an actual styling step, and it’s what earns the PHB-20 its spot as the one our editor reaches for first.

Twenty-six years after a fan built for a market everyone else had priced out, Dowell’s playbook hasn’t really changed. It still starts with thoughtful engineering, then prices its products for the people they’re made for. That’s the whole idea behind “do well,” and it’s why a brand that started in kitchens and laundry rooms now has a fair claim to your vanity table, too.
Shop Dowell at The Beauty Edit Gallery at Spatio, located on the 3rd floor of Opus Mall, Bridgetowne Destination Estate, Quezon City. An editorial-led retail concept—and the first-of-its-kind in the local scene—the gallery spotlights indie innovators, cult icons, and niche trailblazers shaping F-beauty today.
