Red Carpet Ready: Cannes Beauty Looks and Makeup Tricks We Loved

For spot-on trends and flawless makeup looks, we turn to the stars for inspiration. Here are our favorite celebrity beauty looks from Cannes 2024, plus, the beauty tips and products to try.

This year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival may have just wrapped on the Croisette, but we’re not over all the A-list looks that we saw on the famous stairs of the Palais des Festivals. From effortless waves to French girl-inspired red lips, here are our top inspo-worthy beauty looks that you can save for your next big event—plus, notes on how you can achieve them.

Bella Hadid

The model made a lot of stunning appearances during the Cannes festival, but the makeup shades she wore stayed consistent: monochromatic brown tones with minimal hints of peach and pink. Dubbed a “soft glam look” by her longtime makeup artist, Nadia Tayeh, we’re definitely loving how the warmer tones on her skin make her look sunkissed and radiant.

Beauty Extra: Try applying your favorite creamy bronzer across your lids and cheeks to achieve Hadid’s warm, monochromatic look (tip: Use your fingers for a softer, more lived-in effect). To add a bit more oomph to your eyes, try adding a little cat-eye flick at the corner of your lashline.

Selena Gomez

Despite her busy schedule and jet-setting lifestyle, Gomez looked fresh-faced and radiant on the red carpet. Her secret? Makeup artist Hung Vanngo applied Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 35 all over her face and moisturized her eye area with Cetaphil Healthy Renew Eye Gel Serum. “Because all glam should start with hydrated skin,” he said via Instagram.

Beauty Extra: If your skin is on the dry side or if you’re prone to flaking, switch to a creamy, no-rinse cleanser that won’t strip your skin of essential oils. “For Selena, I started by massaging the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser into [the] skin and then wiping [it] off with a wet cloth,” Vanggo shared. “This product is super gentle and can be used without water for added hydration.”

Simone Ashley

Since L’Oréal Paris is the official sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival, we were happy to see the Bridgerton star make an appearance as the brand’s newest ambassador. In an interview with Grazia Daily UK, she shared that her top beauty essentials are water, mascara, and hair lotions. “There’s nothing like having fresh hair to make me feel better. I’m a fan of leave-in products, so I’ll put the L’Oréal Paris Glycolic Gloss Treatment in for five minutes, and once I wash it off, my hair is super shiny. And, you can’t beat a swipe of L’Oréal Paris Panorama Mascara; it makes my eyes pop which is great if I’m feeling a bit flat and need a pick me up.”

Beauty Extra: We agree that mascara is a great trick for brightening your eyes, but since Asian lashes tend to grow downwards, make sure you use an eyelash curler beforehand. If your lashes still struggle to hold a curl, step up your game by applying false eyelashes.

Pia Wurtzbach

The Filipina beauty queen served lots of fashionable looks at the film festival, but what really caught our eye was her long, silky, and flowing hair. Back in 2021, she shared that the secret to her shiny strands is that she would always apply a leave-on hair mask or treatment during her (roughly) one-hour workout sessions. This way, she can save more time and just rinse it off when she showers afterward. “That’s a nice hack I’ve been doing. That makes your hair smoother, healthier, and more manageable,” Wurtzbach shared via Metro.Style.

Beauty Extra: If you’re not a workout girl, you can still cop Wurtzbach’s tip and deep condition your hair by leaving it on while you’re scrolling through Instagram or watching your favorite Netflix show. Simply massage the treatment over the ends of your strands (avoid getting too close to the roots) and gather your hair into a shower cap to avoid making a mess before you’re ready to rinse it off. Another option would be the hair treatments you can do while in the shower, which require just a few minutes to leave on or can even be rinsed off at once—but still give off the same results: soft, silky, and easy-to-style hair.

Emma Stone

The multi-awarded actress also stuck to the 2024 monochromatic makeup trend, but instead of choosing neutrals, she opted for delicate pinks during the Cannes press conference of the film Kinds of Kindness. The actual shade she swiped on is still a mystery, but we’re thinking it might be the same color she wore to this year’s Oscars (hint: It’s the new Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm).

Beauty Extra: Having soft and pillow-y lips like Stone is part of the reason her lipstick look was such a success. To get the same effect, make sure you apply a good lip treatment before bed. Then when you wake up the next morning, you can gently buff any dry flakes away with a dry toothbrush for a smoother, kissable pout.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

We were immediately drawn to how amazing the model’s eyeliner looked—defined and highly pigmented, but still fresh and creamy—not matte like a liquid liner would be. The trick? Her makeup artist, Francesca Abrahamovitch, used the Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner to achieve its rich and seamless finish.

Beauty Extra: If you’re going for a more defined look, make sure that you sharpen the pencil really well before gliding it over your lids. Want a smokier effect? Just use the edge of a Q-tip to blend and soften any hard lines.

Barbara Palvin

This top model absolutely nailed the “French girl” look with her red pout and tousled hair. But since getting the perfect, well-defined red lip can be tricky, try using this makeup move courtesy of Barbara’s MUA Tobi Henney: Instead of using the doe-foot applicator to apply the liquid lipstick directly on your lips, opt for a pointed, flat eyeshadow brush instead for more control and precision.

Beauty Extra: If you think that wearing bold lipstick is too much for you, try patting it on the product using the pad of your finger instead. This way, you can still get a pop of color on your lips without it looking too strong or overpowering.

Anya Taylor-Joy

Can a beauty look really be complete without a pretty manicure? Celeb manicurist Emi Kudo used the Aprés Ionic Gel to transform Anya’s nails into a skinny almond shape. After applying a gel base, she cured two coats of the Aprés Gel Couleur in Forgotten Film. We love how she also set a crystal rhinestone on both her ring fingers to add a unique touch to her vanilla-colored mani.

Beauty Extra: Gel nails can be damaging, so make sure you apply a cuticle oil to your nail beds daily to help keep your nails healthy and strong. Don’t forget to let your nails rest for a couple of weeks after you have your gel mani removed, too!

Kelsey Merritt

Yay, for another Filipina on the Cannes circuit! The famous model stuck to a neutral makeup palette, opting for hints of gold on her lids and a glossy nude lip. But what we really loved about her looks was how her foundation was minimal and allowed her natural skin (and adorable freckles!) to shine through. Real skin has texture and pigments, so we’re glad to see that she’s opting to show that off at big events.

Beauty Extra: If you’d like to show off glowing skin without using a heavy foundation, all you have to do is use a tinted moisturizer and pat an extra layer or two over the areas where you need extra coverage. Once you’re done applying the rest of your makeup, you can set your look with a translucent powder to help boost its lasting power and zap excess shine.

Andie McDowell

When we grow up, can we be Andie McDowell? The actress became a huge inspiration to women who were struggling with their hair’s gray nature when she proudly and confidently showed off her silvery strands on the red carpet. She previously told Vogue that she’s never felt more powerful, honest, and comfortable once she let her real hair color grow out. “I feel like I’m embracing right where I am… And in a lot of ways, I think it’s more striking on my face. I just feel like it suits me,” she shared.

Beauty Extra: Women who embrace their gray strands seem to be a trend that’s gaining more and more traction with each passing year. If you’re tired of coloring your roots and want to try growing out your gray strands, here’s what the experts over at Davines suggest: Try to use a purple shampoo and conditioner weekly. Since these pigments can help balance out yellow tones, your silver strands will appear much healthier and less brassy. Just don’t forget to add an anti-frizz cream and some hair oil to give your hair an extra shine boost!
