Made In Japan

For decades, J-Beauty has long been setting the trends–and the standard. Here’s how and why.
Reading Time: 5 minutes

When one thinks of J-Beauty, what immediately comes to mind? For us, it’s the high-quality, science-backed, and innovative beauty products, the long-standing brands and heritage icons that have been passed down through generations, as are their rituals and traditions. It’s also the J-Pop and manga-inspired crazy-colored cosmetics, odd-but-good–and surprising–solutions to our top-to-toe woes, and many more.

In Japan, beauty is more than skin deep—it’s an art form, a ritual, a way of life, and a science all in one. Rooted in centuries of tradition yet infused with the latest scientific breakthroughs, Japanese beauty practices have quietly and powerfully reshaped the global beauty industry, creating products that do more than just enhance our appearance, but nurture beyond the surface.

The J-Beauty Powerhouse

Behind J-Beauty’s impressive standards are strict measures in place and years of experience and expertise. The Japanese beauty industry’s commitment to excellence is unparalleled, reflecting consumers’ demand for top-quality products to the smallest detail.

A testament to this is Japan’s dominance in the 1959-founded International Science and Formulation Cosmetics Congress (ISFCC) awards, an international organization led by cosmetic engineer associations, to push forward cosmetics that are safe, effective, and of high standard. Since Japan joined the ISFCC in 1962, it has held more awards than other countries, such as France and Germany. Shiseido, for example, led the charge as the recipient of 31 awards between 1976 and 2023, backed by over 150 years of leading many firsts and exploring innovative beauty solutions. J-Beauty companies dedicate years and years to research and development alone.

In Japan, beauty is more than skin deep—it’s an art form, a ritual, a way of life, and a science all in one.

Meticulous and detail-oriented, J-Beauty companies prioritize product efficacy, quality, and safety, with strict policies in place to ensure these standards. In Japan, cosmetics are monitored by its public health authority, the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare or MHLW, under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act. Through this, J-Beauty companies are closely kept in check for the quality of their raw materials, the consistency and safety of their formulas, as well as the conditions of labor and factory protocols. After undergoing such stringent regulations, it’s no wonder that “made in Japan” beauty products have earned such a stellar reputation.

Claim To Fame

Of course, one can’t discount the power of J-Pop in taking the world by storm–and introducing the rest of us to the wonders of J-Beauty. Its global fame is closely tied to its presence in pop culture as Japanese beauty ideals have been showcased in anime, manga, and J-dramas, all playing key roles in making J-Beauty more accessible across continents.

As these cultural exports became more popular, so did the beauty routines and products associated with them. Iconic series like Sailor Moon not only highlight intricate and expressive makeup styles, it also embody the distinct Japanese aesthetic in fashion, hairstyles, and even product packaging. This cultural crossover has made Japanese beauty more than just a trend, but a force to be reckoned with in pop culture.

On the streets, the energy, pep, and vigor of Japanese fashion and beauty fanatics have likewise played a role. For one, Tokyo’s Harajuku district became a driver of J-Beauty trends. Known for its diverse street style, Harajuku mixes traditional Japanese elements with modern iterations, offering a visual treat with its unique makeup looks, bold hairstyles, and stylish beauty packaging. This blend of the old and new has caught the attention of beauty fans worldwide, turning J-Beauty into a cultural phenomenon that everyone wants to try.

Likewise, Hollywood celebrities and K-pop idols have already taken part. Anne Hathaway and BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, for example, have openly praised J-Beauty products, giving these Japanese household names a major boost in popularity around the world.

J-Beauty Breakthroughs

J-Beauty’s dominance surely isn’t an overnight success. Many of its pioneering brands have been around for years, adopting early practices and traditions in skincare and wellness, and harnessing natural essences from the start.

It was in the 1960s when brands like Shiseido and Kanebo began making their mark internationally, showcasing the craftsmanship and effectiveness that would become the hallmarks of J-Beauty. By the 1980s, Japan’s beauty industry experienced a significant boom, marked by the launch of groundbreaking products that soon became global sensations, such as Shiseido’s first skin lotion, the Eudermine Revitalizing Essence, and SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence, also known as “Miracle Water.”

The J-Pop cultural crossover has made Japanese beauty more than just a trend, but a force to be reckoned with in pop culture.

The turn of the millennium likewise brought a surge of technological advancements that revolutionized J-Beauty. As the Japanese did with their electronics and automobiles, at this point, J-Beauty companies invested heavily in research to develop cutting-edge skincare technologies, many of which we are currently using–and reaping the benefits of–through the J-Beauty products in our cosmetic kits today.

In the succeeding years, J-Beauty’s global prominence was driven largely by the digital revolution. Social media platforms and influencers played crucial roles in spreading J-Beauty trends and products beyond Japan’s borders. This era also saw collaborations between Japanese brands and international partners, amplifying J-Beauty’s reach and appeal.

To date, with social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok becoming key hubs for sharing J-Beauty tips, tutorials, and product recommendations, it’s become easier for J-Beauty’s once-niche brands to become mainstream favorites.

Fortunately for us, J-Beauty has clamored a big enough demand for its iconic and cult-favorites to make its way to our shores.

There’s always something new–and groundbreaking–to discover in J-Beauty, truly making it an exciting beauty phenomenon to watch.

Minimalist skincare

One of the latest trends on the rise is the focus on minimalist skincare which advocates for a streamlined skincare routine with fewer, but more effective products. The trend aims to achieve healthy, glowing skin with minimal effort—a concept that resonates with today’s busy lifestyles.

Fermented ingredients

Another trend gaining traction is the use of fermented ingredients in skincare. Inspired by traditional Japanese fermentation techniques used in food production, these ingredients are believed to enhance the effectiveness of skincare products by increasing their nutrient content and improving absorption.

Sun protection

Last but not least, SPF continues to be a major focus in J-Beauty, with many products–which aren’t sunscreen–also offering high levels of sun protection while being lightweight and easy to wear. Japan’s innovative sunscreen formulas have long set the standard for sun protection, but these days, even non-sunscreen products have become infused with added protection from the sun–and skin-nourishing ingredients, too.
