All the more reason to visit Seoul: We scourge the city for brands and products to shop while you're there.
Reading Time: 10 minutes

Korean beauty, or K-beauty, has taken the beauty world by storm, not just in the Philippines, but everywhere, and it’s not hard to see why. It revolutionized skincare routines and makeup trends globally, emphasizing radiant, glowing skin with fresh and youthful makeup looks. Whether you’re a skincare junkie or love experimenting with makeup, there is just something about K-beauty that’s bound to get us all hooked.

From Seoul to Manila: The Rise of K-Beauty in the Philippines

K-beauty has made its mark on the Filipino beauty industry, reshaping a lot of our preferences and setting new beauty standards left and right. Not to mention, with all the Korean dramas and K-pop tunes taking over our screens, it’s no surprise that Filipinos’ curiosity about K-beauty has shot through the roof.

One of the key factors that contributed to the K-beauty craze in the Philippines is the influx of Korean brands hitting the Philippine market. Way back in 2006, The Face Shop was one of the first brands to bring K-beauty to the country. And it didn’t take long for other brands to follow through, as brands like Innisfree, Laneige, and Nature Republic have opened up shop in Manila, and slowly became household names, too. The accessibility of these brands through local retailers, online platforms, and standalone stores at the malls has made K-beauty products more accessible to Filipinos.

But the advent of K-beauty in the Philippines wasn’t just about introducing us to skincare and beauty products that are made in Korea—it has shaped makeup trends here, too. That coveted “dewy skin” look is one of the trademarks of K-beauty, promoting luminous and well-hydrated skin paired with a natural makeup aesthetic.

Filipino beauty enthusiasts have embraced Korean-inspired makeup techniques like gradient lips to soft eyeshadow looks and straight eyebrows that reflected the shift towards minimalistic and fresh-faced looks. K-beauty’s emphasis on glass-like skin has also left a lasting impact on beauty standards in the Philippines, as it likewise encouraged individuals to prioritize skincare and embrace their natural beauty. The pursuit of “Chok-Chok” skin, for example, a Korean term for dewy and plump skin, has sparked an increased awareness of skincare ingredients and routines tailored to specific skin types and concerns.

The wide use of social media platforms also fueled the popularity of K-beauty in the Philippines.  Through this, Filipino fans discovered new avenues to connect with their favorite Korean stars, allowing them to get up close and personal with their skincare routines and makeup looks. Beauty content creators have also played a massive role in spreading the word about K-beauty, sharing insights about K-beauty products, recreating Korean celebrity looks, and providing recommendations about which K-beauty gems are worth splurging on. As a result, Filipinos became more knowledgeable about K-beauty products and started actively seeking out K-beauty brands to add to their routines.

The Beauty Icons of Hallyu

K-dramas and K-pop stars have especially taken on major roles in shaping the beauty landscape in the Philippines. Korean dramas, with their captivating storylines and charismatic actors, have amassed a dedicated fanbase in the Philippines. Beyond entertainment, K-dramas have also influenced beauty standards and trends in the country, sparking a newfound obsession with K-beauty among Filipino viewers.

Similarly, K-pop has also played a significant role in popularizing K-beauty in the Philippines, with K-pop idols serving as influential figures in shaping beauty trends. Groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, EXO, and TWICE are not only known for their musical talents but also for their impeccable style and makeup looks. K-pop stars often sport dewy and clear complexions, and bold makeup looks that resonate with a lot of their Filipino fans. With their massive global followings, these idols have the ability to turn a product into an overnight sensation with just a single endorsement.

One such example is the Moonshot Microfit Cushion, which skyrocketed to fame thanks to the backing of none other than BLACKPINK’s Lisa. The cushion, already a cult favorite among beauty enthusiasts for its lightweight formula and great coverage, experienced a surge in popularity following Lisa’s endorsement. Fans even started referring to it as the “Lisa cushion”. Beauty fanatics around the world flocked to purchase the Moonshot Cushion and social media platforms were ablaze with rave reviews and makeup tutorials, further fueling the cushion’s popularity.

K-Beauty Versus Western Beauty – What Sets Them Apart?

Before K-beauty was all the rage in the Philippines, many of our cosmetic shelves used to be lined with Western-made beauty products. While both K-beauty and Western beauty share the common goal of helping individuals look and feel their best, they approach beauty from different angles.

One of the biggest differences lies in the approach to skincare. K-beauty places a strong emphasis on the “skin first, makeup second” approach whereas Western beauty tends to focus more on makeup to enhance features and cover imperfections. This means following elaborate skincare routines focused on hydration, brightening, and addressing specific skin concerns. These routines also involve multiple steps, including cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and targeted treatments.

Korean skincare products are also renowned for their innovative formulations and unique ingredients. For example, ingredients like snail mucin, ginseng extract, and fermented ingredients have gained popularity for their ability to hydrate, brighten, and rejuvenate the skin. Korean skincare products also tend to have gentler ingredients, one example being their use of PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) instead of harsher acids to exfoliate the skin.

In terms of makeup, Korean beauty trends usually favor a more minimalist approach, focusing on enhancing natural features and achieving a youthful, “barely-there” look. In contrast, Western beauty trends can be more glamorous and dramatic, with bold and more statement-making makeup looks.
